VIRGINIA JAKIM she/her

Patio / 2024 / Powder-coated aluminium,  plastic wall hook for flower pot, textile cable, steel, textile cable, parasol screw base / 45 x 30 x 30 cm , 200 x 30 x 30 cm

The patio series came to life while I was working as a Designer for an interior landscaping company. I spent half of my week installing greenery in brand new offices for multiplying start-ups that were invading the city, taking up whole buildings and would disappear in two years; the other half, watering my own practice. This series of interior lamps is a visual poem to the ucommunal gardens I ride with my bike through when I commute to my studio in Berlin, their DIY fondness and quiet resistance; to the patios of my childhood in Buenos Aires, their hanging lamps and pots, their forged iron and bent pipes furniture, their mosquitos, fireflies, tangled water hoses, and their distant memory dreamy allure.

Bio
Virginia Jakim is a Buenos Aires born, Berlin based conceptual designer and maker. With a background in Fashion Design and Contemporary Jewellery, she specializes in handmade objects in metal and has worked in different areas of Art and Design, from Costume to Interior Landscaping.

Her work is based on the revision of wearable and everyday-life objects. The intentional use of their poetic potential and the evocative aspect of materials are at the center of my practice. With a tongue-in-cheek tone, Jakim re-designs known objects, remixing their elements to cause an alteration in the final product and its usability, one that bounces between funny, dreamy and eery. In this gesture, she proposes a fresh gaze on the things that we take for granted and use them as trampolines to dwell on topics like desire, belonging, entertainment and power.
