Wandering Soul(s) / 2023 / raffia displaced from Madagascar to India to Canada on powder coated steel frame with unbleached jute, sisal, burlap, rope and bells / 309 x 104 cm each
Wandering Soul(s) interprets sites of traditional Korean ceremonies, a place for mourning with gok sung for a burial, and a place of the Korean Shaman to release the collective han (unresolved historical grief), anticipating an activation that brings repetition, gestures and sounds to the spaces in-between those living and lingering.
Bio
mihyun maria kim researches (un)translatable affects shaped by languages entangled with unresolved historical grief and transmissions of longing. Her research and creative activities currently focus on Korean han in relation to Portuguese saudade and German sehnsucht. Exhaustion of the body, repetition of gestures, fragments of hi/stories, and suspended feelings are explored as forms between memory and imagination, interpreted across space and time. Through relational methodology, her multivocal outcomes take visible and invisible form in poetry, painting, performance/activations, audio/video, site-specific installation, community-based round tables, and public art.
